THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN BLACKSBURG HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR A MIX OF FREEZING RAIN AND SLEET, IN EFFECT THURSDAY 11 a.m. UNTIL FRIDAY 6 p.m.
RAIN WILL OVERSPREAD THE AREA TODAY WHILE TEMPERATURES SLOWLY FALL TO BELOW FREEZING. FREEZING RAIN IS EXPECTED FIRST… ESPECIALLY AT HIGHER ELEVATIONS, AND THEN TRANSITION TO A MIX OF FREEZING RAIN AND SLEET BY TONIGHT.
TREES, POWER LINES AND OTHER ELEVATED SURFACES WILL ACCUMULATE ICE. AMOUNTS OF ONE QUARTER OF AN INCH TO ONE HALF OF AN INCH ARE EXPECTED FROM THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH EARLY FRIDAY MORNING, ESPECIALLY AT HIGHER ELEVATIONS.
SOME SLEET OR SNOW IS POSSIBLE LATE THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH EARLY FRIDAY MORNING. AMOUNTS ARE EXPECTED TO BE LESS THAN AN INCH. BECAUSE OF THE WARM GROUND. ICE OR SNOW IS NOT LIKELY TO FORM ON THE ROADS UNTIL POSSIBLY LATE THIS AFTERNOON.

Blue Ridge Community College opens at 10 am.
Yellow Brick Road Early Learning Center opens at 9am.
The Maury River Senior Center in Buena Vista will be open and will have Meals but there will be no transportation.
