I-81 Accident

An accident on Interstate 81 in Augusta County is causing traffic delays.

The accident is at mile marker 211.7.

Motorists can expect major delays. The south left shoulder, left lane, and right lane are closed. Traffic backups were approximately 5.0 miles around noon today.

Hand to Amherst

The Amherst County School Board has named Parry McCluer High School principal Haywood Hand as Amherst County High School’s new principal. Hand earned his undergraduate degree at James Madison University and a graduate degree at Lynchburg College. Hand had been principal at Parry McCluer since 2005.

Flood Watch

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN BLACKSBURG HAS ISSUED A FLASH FLOOD WATCH FOR ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY, ALLEGHANY, BATH, BOTETOURT, FRANKLIN, AND ROANOKE THROUGH THIS EVENING.
SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WITH HEAVY RAIN WILL DEVELOP THIS AFTERNOON AND THIS EVENING. SOME OF THE STORMS WILL BE SLOW MOVERS… POTENTIALLY PRODUCING UP TO 2 TO 3 INCHES OF RAIN PER HOUR. THIS COULD CAUSE FLASH FLOODING… ESPECIALLY IF THE RAIN FALLS ON SLOPED TERRAIN OR MULTIPLE STORMS MOVE OVER THE SAME AREA. RAINS OF OVER 2 INCHES COULD CAUSE FLASH FLOODING ALONG SMALL STREAMS AND CREEKS.

Parade on Friday

The Shell ROTELLA® SuperRigs Truck event will be held June 10-13 at Lee Hi Truck Plaza.

Downtown Lexington will also be hosting a parade Friday at 6 p.m. The parade will include SuperRigs and will feature a collection of antique trucks and cars. Volunteers will be walking the parade route handing out coupons, gifts and information on the three-day event.

Parade entries will depart from the Maury River Middle School and will be following the Christmas parade route, with some traffic interruptions and street closures. Those residents living on Waddell, Wallace, Taylor, Houston and Main Streets should expect temporary traffic interruptions during the parade.

Water Conservation

Buena Vista residents were being requested to conserve water on a voluntary basis.
Buena Vista citizens were being asked to conserve roughly 15 percent of their normal water usage, due to concerns about the overall water supply.

Truck Event!

The Shell ROTELLA® SuperRigs Truck event will be held June 10-13 at Lee Hi Truck Plaza.

To celebrate this event, Downtown Lexington will sponsor a parade featuring a collection of vehicles, including the SuperRigs, antique trucks and cars and a few other surprises. Also, volunteers will walk the parade route handing out coupons, gifts and other related information.

The parade entries will gather at and leave from the Maury River Middle School, and follow the Christmas parade route. There will be some traffic interruptions and street closures. Residents living on Waddell, Wallace, Taylor, Houston and Main streets should expect temporarily traffic interruptions during the parade. In addition, area residents’ routes across or into town may be diverted.

Severe Thunderstorm

A severe thunderstorm Thursday night in the Rockbridge area resulted in downed trees, hail and high winds, and a few power outages in Lexington, Buena Vista, and Rockbridge County.
A tree slammed into a garage damaging the structure. Trees were also reported down in the road on Route 60 near Bares Wood Lane, in the 100 block of Houston Street in Lexington, and on Rt 60 West near Stop-In. Power lines were also reported to be down on Johnstone Street.

Escapee Recaptured!

A Rockbridge County inmate was apprehended Sunday in Botetourt County after escaping from custody in Lexington.

35-year-old James Murphy, who was facing grand larceny charges, assaulted his guard Sunday morning around 4:15 at Carilion Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Lexington. Search dogs later led law enforcement officials to the Lexington Rescue Squad Building where a squad car was found to be missing. Deputies in Botetourt County found Murphy a few hours later near Troutville and took him into custody.

Murphy is now at the Rockbridge Regional Jail and is facing additional charges of assault on a law enforcement officer, escape from custody by force, and grand larceny of a motor vehicle

Deck Collapse

A deck that collapsed last Friday at a home on Greenhouse Road in Lexington apparently was caused by a faulty attachment of the deck to the house.
Rockbridge County building inspectors found that the bolts that should have attached the deck to the house were never properly secured.
22 students were treated at Carilion Stonewall Jackson Hospital after the deck collapse.

Vehicle Fire

A vehicle fire is causing problems today (Monday) on I-81 at mile marker 199. Motorists can expect major delays due to vehicle fire. The north left shoulder, left lane, right lane, and right shoulder are closed. Traffic backups are approximately 4.0 miles.
